The origins of the concept of health-care for the student population is linked to the opening, in Belgrade, of the first University in 1924. The first official, student's Polyclinic opened in 1931 and in 1948 the Pantovic Sanitorium, at 29 Prote Mateje Street, was given to the students of Belgrade University. Four years later another building, in Krunska Street, was offered to the students to extend their medical facilities. In 1961 a residential Polyclinic was opened, later, in 1971, the Polyclinic was transformed into The Institute for the Protection of Student Health. Today, the Institute is responsible for the health-care of some 120,000 university and higher education students and 10,000 university employees in Belgrade.

The care of the students is undertaken by 223 full-time staff; four consultants, 75 doctors, 110 nursing sisters and technicians and 34 administrative staff. There are 2 professors, 5 Masters of Science and 15 specialists working for the Institute.

The Institute has five divisions

  • Basic medical care unit (six doctors, 10 general medicine specialists, and 1 school medicine specialist.
  • Preventative health care unit (two specialist epidemiologists, 1 health at work specialist and two general medicine doctors)
  • Stomatology unit (21 stomatologists of whom 16 are specialists in the field)
  • Specialist unit (4 opthalmologists, 3 dermatovenerologists, 4 specialists of internal medicine, 3 specialists of ORL, 4 neuropsychiatrists, 2 psychologists, 2 physiotherapists and 1 specialist in the field of sports medicine)
  • Gynaecolgy unit (7 gynaecologists).

The Institute has excellent modern, laboratory facilities where 2 specialists, medical biochemists and 16 laboratory diagnostic technicians work. There is an X-ray unit with a specialist radiologist and a recently modernized and renovated 22-bed in-patient unit, with two fully-equipped operating theatres and intensive and semi-intensive care facilities. Apart from general surgical procedures, specialist surgical procedures, in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, urology, oncology, orthopaedic and gynaecology are also performed.

The Institute of The Protection of Student Health also operates advisory units for:

Chronic lung disease and asthma, diet, Nephrology unit, Rheumatology unit, Orthopaedic unit, Diabetes unit, Urology unit and Cardiovascular unit. For the foreseeable future, there is also a unit for education about and prevention of, sexually transmitted diseases and it is the only centre in the country to perform confidential testing for H.I.V and also offers night testing.

More than a million procedures are carried out annually. Students are required to produce their identity cards and student Index books in order to use the facility. All university students, whether recipients of government grants or not, and all high school students have the right to receive advice or treatment.

Student's obligations are as follows:
Their medical identity cards must be regularly stamped and they must register in the Polyclinic. Medical certificates must be produced when registering for the university. Mandatory medical examinations and tests are required for all first and third-year students and for all students applying for a place in a hall of residence, Special reduced prices for students are offered by the Polyclinic for such medical certificates as those required for example, for driving licences, travel abroad and many other medical certificates, which may be required regarding the particular requirements of a student's faculty. The units are open from 7. 30 to 19.30 hrs. The in-patient unit works for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays the In-patient unit operates a 24 hour, on-call system.
