"Svetozar Markovic" University Library is the largest university
library in the country. It is the central library of The University
of Belgrade and The University of Arts, and also the head
library for all specialized libraries and libraries of higher
education in Serbia. Articles of Incorporation of the University
Library were enacted in 1921 and with a support of Carnegy
Fund it was established in the building where it is nowadays
on May 24 1926.
With present holdings of more than 1,500,000 volumes, books
and magazines and enriched with enormous experience in library-information
structure development, University Library is involved in teaching
and research and development programmes as well as in library-information
system development of the University. All publications and
other non-literary materials acquired are processed in accordance
with the international regulations on bibliographic reference,
and the data are entered in corresponding catalogues thereof.
Book name directory involves catalogue cards in alphabetical
order of authors’ surnames (or of title), while the
branch directory integrates catalogue cards in scientific
field order. In addition, there is an E-catalogue comprising
all publications received after 1988. Library users have access
to central E-catalogue of Serbia with more than 1,500,000
entries. Any required literature not present in the libraries
of Belgrade, users may order via inter-library exchange both
within the country and abroad. The service is charged by the
price list in accordance with the corresponding country prices
from which publications come from as well as with the publication
type. The price range is between 500 and 1,000 CSD, while
the delivery time is up to 3 weeks -

Library is mainly dedicated to students, teachers and researchers,
although it may be used by other citizens. Membership lasts
for 365 days of the day of enrolment, and every year between
5,000 and 10,000 members enrol. Apart from annual membership
there is also a temporary membership option.
The Library incorporates 4 reading rooms: for students of
114 seats, for teachers of 18 seats, periodicals reading room
of 16 seats and the reading room of Rarities Department of
2 seats, while the reading room of National literature Department
is situated in 24 Bircaninova Street. Within the University
Library there is also an E-room with 15 seats where electronic
databases from library holdings can be used, while academic
network can be used for Internet surfing. Library members
may use Internet for free every day for half an hour.
Library has 14,000 electronic scientific magazines and 40
databases available. Articles and data can be printed or downloaded.
Access is allowed via other PCs in academic network.
"Svetozar Markovic" University Library is situated in 71a
Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra Street. The working hours of the
library are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
