The first issue of the magazine “Student” -
the magazine of Belgrade students, was published on May 17
1937, what renders it student newspapers with longest tradition
in our country. During its rich and turbulent history, Student
has had different names: Belgrade Student, New Student, The
Magazine of Belgrade Students Student etc.
Irrespective of its name, or social-economic contexts, Student
has truly informed its readers on all the activities related
to the University and other topics, student programmes and
activities, current social events, science and art issues
Together with Zagreb’s “Polet” and Ljubljana’s
“Mladina”, Student was the pioneer of the new
stream in our society, the promoter of firstly pop culture
and afterwards sub-culture. During the grand student protest
in spring 1968, Student played one of the major roles, and
the daily print runs of the time were reaching the figures
of between 50,000 and 80,000 copies. Student was the first
free newspapers, read by all age-groups, of which print runs
would sometimes be sold in few hours. Nevertheless, the fifth
June issue of the Student from 1968 was permanently forbidden,
and since that time penalties, prohibitions, print run suspensions
have become integral parts and symbols of the magazine.
The editorial staff have incorporated generations of, later
recognized journalists, writers, politicians who have established
a specific and well-known revolutionary-critical spirit of
the magazine.
Nowadays, Student is published once a month with print run
of 3,000 copies which are distributed to students of Belgrade
University for free. Magazine has a large scope of topics,
and apart from the topics related to education, it reflects
different social issues, culture and art, sports and the issues
others do not write about.
The founder and publisher of the Student is Student Alliance
of Belgrade.
